MYOFASCIAL RELEASE: What it is, and how it can help you!

Myofascial Release is a hands-on approach that uses movement and pressure to release adhesions and tension in muscles, ligaments, nerves, and fascia.

It is widely used in the sports and fitness world but can benefit anyone who has pain or discomfort due to repetitive motion or injury. This technique can help alleviate chronic pain, improve mobility, and prevent injuries.

How does Myofascial Release work?

This manual therapy technique targets adhesions, which are areas of scar tissue that form in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These adhesions can result from overuse, injury, or even inactivity. When an adhesion forms, it can cause pain, stiffness, and limited mobility.

We use our hands to apply tension and pressure to the affected area while guiding the patient through specific movements. This combination of tension and movement through a full range of motion helps break up the adhesions, freeing up the affected tissue, and improving the range of motion.

What conditions can Myofascial Release help with?

Eligible conditions include, but are not limited to:

    1.    Back pain

    2.    Neck pain

    3.    Carpal tunnel syndrome

    4.    Tennis elbow

    5.    Plantar fasciitis

    6.    Sciatica

    7.    Rotator cuff injuries

    8.    IT band syndrome

    9.    Knee pain

    10.    Headaches

Benefits of Myofascial Release:

  1. Pain Relief: helps reduce pain and discomfort by releasing tension and breaking up adhesions in the affected tissue.

  2. Improved Range of Motion: breaks up adhesions and scar tissue, range of motion and flexibility are improved.

  3. Increased Blood Flow: helps improve circulation, leading to faster healing and improved overall health.

  4. Better Athletic Performance: helps athletes recover from injuries faster and prevent future injuries by improving range of motion and flexibility.

  5. No Downtime: Patients can return to normal activities immediately after a session.

  6. Customized Treatment: practitioners use a personalized approach to treat each patient, tailoring the treatment to their specific needs.

What to expect during a session:

The practitioner will start by evaluating the patient's range of motion and by using palpation to identify any areas of tension or adhesions. We then use our hands to apply pressure and tension to the affected area while guiding the patient through specific movements.

Patients may feel some productive discomfort during the session, but it should not be painful. The practitioner will adjust their technique as needed to ensure the patient is comfortable.

Sessions typically last between 15 and 30 minutes, and patients can return to normal activities immediately after the session.

Who can benefit from Myofascial Release Techniques?

Myofascial Release can benefit anyone who has pain or discomfort due to repetitive motion or injury. Athletes commonly use it, but it can also help people who work in professions that require repetitive motions, such as desk workers, musicians, and artists.

It can also be beneficial for people who have chronic pain or a limited range of motion due to age or inactivity.
